John Gregory Bourke Document Analysis - Project Reflection
During this project I fest very connected to the people I was reading about. Im not sure if it was because of the area where I live in relation to where the Indians lived or if it was because of my strong belief in a equality for all but any research that took place for this project was very interesting. Once at the Library for Southwest Studies I was able to indulge in the primary sources and find what I truly wanted to write about. I looked through so many micro films, snap shoots of newspaper clippings, journals and pictures to find so really opinionated pieces I could analyze. After I found the piece I wanted I read and reread it. How I felt about the words that were written in this 1800's newspaper clipping in John's journal was so saddening. They were harsh words, they described the hate and hurt, it made it very interesting to annotate.
When I was writing out my annotations of what I thought was the worst sentences in the clipping I had to fight for the Native Americans, I had to give them a voice and a face. In addition to speaking for the indigenous people I had to work hard to find what John Gregory Bourke was trying to say by attaching this newspaper clipping. What was his ideology? What did he think about the Native Americans? Where was he? Was he trying to help the Native Americans? What was he trying to tell people by attaching the clipping? By doing some more research on the time frame and where John was when he was writing this section of the journal. The article clipping was from the Arizona Sentinel in 1875. Trying to find the answer to all of these questions in my research was difficult, as well as trying to depict what happened in history through this article clipping and journal was a big challenge.
Looking back at the process of deciding what to analysis, the research and putting it all together, I had a really good time looking into what people thought during that time. By reading this newspaper clipping I was able to see and read the opinions of the people and it was kind of like playing detective trying to see what people were feeling and seeing how I should analysis it. At the beginning of my project I had some trouble finding a really opinionated primary source that I could analysis for a bias but after looking through diaries I found that it was the best place to find exactly what I wanted.
