I will being doing my LINK internship with Durango Mountain Resort Ski Patrol in Durango, CO. I will be working closely and along side the ski patrollers at the ski area. This work helps keep skiers and snowboarders safe on the mountain by providing emergency medical rescue, as well as making sure conditions are safe to ski/ride in. Duties include sweeping runs for skiers at closing time, marking dangerous obstacles, observing trauma and crash rescue, participating in trainings, and transporting equipment.
My main mentor will Mitch Carrier who is a supervisor for DMR Ski Patrol. However each day and throughout the day I will be switching between patrollers who need my help or want to mentor me. I hope by being with many mentor patrollers that I will be able to observe emergency medical procedures to help people quickly while in the outdoors. I also hope to learn more about safety procedures on the mountain as well as learning more about the terrain and how to be safe on it. I also hope to gain knowledge from the trainings that the patrollers will be putting on and taking part in that will be useful to me for my future.
I am very interested in pursuing a medical career later in my life and I believe that this internship will help me gain some of the knowledge I need and show me what I’m getting into. I also enjoy the environment and want to work outside. So interning with ski patrol will allow me to get some basic medical training while being outside. My personal goal for this internship is to acquire more knowledge about safety in the outdoors so that I can be adventurous and safe when I’m on my own. Academically I hope that this internship will give me some insight and help me to decide if I want to study medical or the environment in college.
To better prepare myself for this internship I will be looking into snow safety, medical training required for ski patrollers, information on the environmental area where I will be working, and any other information my mentor has for me to learn. I have already begun to dive into the learning by taking an avalanche course and now I have the AVY 1 certification. I will be studying about the National Forest Service and their relationship with Ski Patrol. My mentor has asked me to read some text which will further my knowledge and benefit me during my internship. I will have to show the ski patrollers that I am a capable skier that can ski all terrain and that I am a trustworthy person so that they can trust me to help them on the mountain in emergency situations.
My project for this internship will be a brochure that covers the details of what I learned in an informational layout. I will take note on statistics that I gather from ski patrollers as well as other employees on the mountain. The brochure will give details as to how to be safe while skiing and snowboarding, as well as what to do incase of an emergency out in nature. I might include some quotes from some of the people I work with during my internship to get some of their advice. The goal of the brochure project will be to inform my peers at school, my teachers, and the public on what knowledge I have gained from the internship and how it can be used to benefit me and anyone else in the future.
Setting up this internship has been tricky but in a good way. I learned many valuable lessons that will help me in getting jobs, working, and my communications in the future. Finding a mentor at Ski Patrol was an interesting process, I went through many people to find Mitch, including Zoe the LINK coordinator. I had to communicate with my mentor to work out a schedule and I had to have meetings with him to orient myself with their day to day schedule. In the end the process taught me the importance of effective communication, research, and flexibility. I am excited to be able to work closely with the Ski Patrollers and to be out on the ski slopes learning as much as I can. I cant wait to learn and be out in the real world away from school to apply my knowledge.
