Reflection
I did not change any of my classifications of the unknowns nor did I compel any of my peers to change their classifications. I was confident that my decisions were accurate and my peer’s results were similar. I felt that all of the classifications were thought through and that based on the results that they were correct. When making my decisions on the classifications I did discuss one of the unknown’s bonding with a peer. I was unsure on some of the results, so I compared them with my classmate and I decided on a classification. I believe based on the tests that I did and the tests that my peers performed, conductivity and melting point were the most valuable tests for making a distinction between ionically and covalently bonded substances. For each bond, conductivity and melting point are the most distinctive properties, which allowed for a strong identification of the unknown substances. For example, ionic bonds are conductive whereas covalent bonds are nonconductive and unknown substance C was very conductive which helped in determining that it was an ionic bond. Solubility and crystalline structure were the least valuable or helpful for test for making a distinction between ionically and covalently bonded substances. These properties can vary for the types of bonds, not every substance is soluble or has a crystalline structure. For example, covalently bonded substances vary in solubility, therefore making it not most valuable test for a distinction.
The online scientific peer review was important for us as students to explore and understand what we were doing in the lab. It allowed us to engage and brainstorm about science and ideas we have. Scientist in the real world something similar to this, they talk to other scientist, they question and reevaluate their work. We most likely did not do as much work as the scientist do, they probably go into more depth into the science and work. This discussion allowed me to see what my peers did and thought. I learned from them and they learned from me, which I think is very important in the scientific process.
I think that if we spend more time doing this discussion we would be able to explore a little more and change things, we could more in depth on experiments and ideas. We might even be able to find sources and evidence to learn from which would give us access to review more content and have a better understanding. Although it was difficult to discuss in a casual conversation about our tests and this lab, having the discussion online allowed for fast commenting and easy access to data.
