Project overview
The goal of this project was to understand the workings of the Untied States Senate. Students from Lori's senior Humanities classes were assigned senators and were asked to best represent our senator and his/her political views, write legislation, participate in a mock senate hearing. The class was divided into two committees, one discussing climate change and the other addressing the fiscal cliff. In committees mock senators worked to amend the legislation and get it out of committee so it could be voted on as a whole model senate. This project allowed for students to see how the political system works and experience the challenge that real lawmakers meet when trying to decide the rules of our society. I took on the role of Barbara Boxer democrat senator of California who is also the ranking member of the Environment and Public Works Committee. I assisted the Chair during the EPW Committee to make sure my party's view was in the bill.
